Where can I sign up for SmartTown WiFi?
By now, you should have received two seperate emails from SmartTown WiFi. One email from onboarding@smarttownwifi.com, and the other from welcome@smarttownwifi.com, inviting you to join the SmartTown Community by Home Telecom. If you are unable to locate the emails or need additional help to get setup, one of our customer service representatives are available by phone to help in any way they can at 888-746-4482.
How much is it to access SmartTown community Wi-Fi?
Absolutely nothing! This is a free community Wi-Fi service available to Home Telecom customers.
Will this increase my monthly bill?
No, there will be no additional charges associated with enabling SmartTown on your router. This is a value-added service with the sole purpose of providing a more secure community Wi-Fi experience for our customers.
Will I only be able to access SmartTown community Wi-Fi at the drop pin locations on the map?
Not necessarily. We will be turning up additional separate and secure SmartTown networks that use Home Telecom routers located throughout the community. This means you will have additional coverage as you make your way through neighborhoods in your community.
How will enabling SmartTown on my router affect my network security?
The security of your network is always our top priority. Rest assured that enabling SmartTown on your router will not compromise the security of your personal network or data. SmartTown Wi-Fi operates independently and has its own security protocols in place.
Can I opt out of enabling my router to be a part of SmartTown?
While we strongly encourage you to support this community initiative, we understand that you might have concerns. Please reach out to one of our friendly customer service representatives at 888-746-4482, and we will address your concerns and remove the SmartTown network from your router, if needed.
If I opt out of enabling my router to be used for SmartTown, can I still access public Wi-Fi spaces?
Yes. This will not impact your ability to enjoy protected SmartTown community Wi-Fi while you are out and about.
What is the difference between public Wi-Fi and SmartTown community Wi-Fi?
Public Wi-Fi is often provided without a password or a password that anyone can obtain to get on the network (think of your local coffee shop). There is no additional layer of security that someone cannot access your data while connected to the same network. With SmartTown community Wi-Fi, your data is protected by the Passpoint certificate and policies that are put in place. Your data is encrypted so you can use your credit card online, check your bank account, or even work from the park with a bigger safety net.
What is Passpoint?
Passpoint is a Wi-Fi standard for securely accessing the internet remotely. This occurs by downloading a type of certificate to your phone that provides additional checks and blocks intrusions. This will allow you to securely access a connection to SmartTown Wi-Fi.
Why do I need to use Passpoint to access SmartTown?
Passpoint was created through a Wi-Fi alliance, giving a Wi-Fi standard for encryption. If you want to check your bank account, send work emails, or more, you’re going to feel much better knowing Passpoint is there to provide added layers of protection and security.
How do I get Passpoint?
Instructions to set up Passpoint can be found here. If you need additional help or have other questions, one of our friendly customer service representatives are available by phone to help in any way they can at 888-746-4482.
Can I access Smart Town from home?
No. If you have a home network, your device will prefer that network over the Smart Town network. You won’t have to do anything to make the switch.
Will I have to log in to Smart Town every time?
No. Once you connect your device with Passpoint one time, you are good to go after that. Your device should remember the network after that and automatically connect.
Why pay for the internet when I can get it for free?
This is an added bonus to the service you already subscribe to! You can now use your service that you subscribe to and walk around your neighborhood and continue to connect to the internet.
Will this slow down my speed in my home network?
No, the speed that you subscribe to will always stay the same. SmartTown has its own network that is passpoint protected and will not interfere with your home network.
I clicked away from the Passpoint download and can’t finish that process.
Forget this network and add again. - It may not work instantly, after a few minutes if there is no change, please try again.
What if there are multiple people in my home that want access to SmartTown?
Each person in the household will use the same Passpoint username and password to log in.
I connected to the HomeSC_Guest network in the past and I'm having trouble connecting to the HomeSC customer network.
If you have connected to the HomeSC_Guest network prior to setting up your Passpoint profile, then you may have to go into the settings on your phone and forget the HomeSC_Guest network after Passpoint is downloaded. Once you forget the HomeSC_Guest network, you can join the HomeSC customer network.
